At Brdo near Kranj, a two day 18th meeting of the Association of European Senates ended on Friday, 2 June 2017, and was attended by representatives of 14 countries. As the host, the National Council of the Republic of Slovenia prepared two main themes for discussion. On the first day, a seminar named the European Senate - the road to a closer link with EU citizens? took place, at which the possible positive effects of the second chamber of the European Parliament were discussed in order to decreased the democratic deficit and strengthen the contact between EU citizens and the European Parliament.
At the beginning of the meeting, president of the National Council Mitja Bervar addressed the participants and emphasized the significance of the meeting of European senates for future cooperation among second chambers in European countries. Representatives of senates were also welcomed by the President of the National Assembly dr. Milan Brglez. At the session, multiple bilateral meetings occurred as well. In such a way, President of the National Assemblz with his delegation met separately with representatives of France and Czech Republic.
The second day of the meeting was intended for a general discussion regarding the theme of Second Chambers facing the challenges of time, at which participants discussed experiences of their own countries and discussed the future way of functioning of senates. Representatives were welcomed by Prime Minister dr. Miro Cerar, and President of the Republic Borut Pahor held a lunch at Brdo Castle for all heads of delegations.
